NATO to Hold Reduced-Scale Baltic Sea Naval Exercises

(MENAFN) According to reports, NATO and US-led naval forces are preparing to begin large-scale exercises in the Baltic Sea this week, though the operation will involve fewer assets compared to last year due to competing global military commitments.

The BALTOPS exercise, scheduled from June 4 to June 20, will include around 20 ships from 15 countries and approximately 6,000 personnel, representing roughly half the size of the previous year’s drills.

German Rear Admiral Stephan Haisch said: “In this period, it is a sign of the alliance's strength, that a major exercise is being conducted, under US leadership, with broad NATO participation,” according to reports.

Officials indicated that the reduced scale is partly due to ongoing deployments in other regions, including the Middle East and the Arctic, which are currently absorbing naval resources.

Despite the smaller footprint, the exercise is still expected to be the largest naval operation in the Baltic Sea this year.

Operations will begin in the western Baltic region before shifting toward areas near Sweden’s Gotland island, a strategically significant location for regional maritime security.

Rear Admiral Haisch noted that protecting sea lines of communication remains a core objective, covering both military logistics and commercial shipping routes.

He also stated that, despite heightened tensions in the region, he does not anticipate actions that would trigger NATO’s collective defense mechanism under Article 5, according to reports.
